About the Box

Between August 2013 and May 2014, Bloomsbury Festival in a Box researched, implemented and analysed a pilot scheme for engaging people with dementia in the arts.

Funded by an AHRC award, the project aimed to offer an opportunity for people to participate in a cultural event from which they would normally be excluded.

In turn, it was intended that the box would become an archive through which participants would have an opportunity to share their knowledge and stories of Bloomsbury and the surrounding area.

Today, the Bloomsbury Festival in a Box scheme continues to run as part of the Bloomsbury Festival’s year-round engagement activity – supported by the School of Advanced Study. The scheme creates new artworks and continues to develop an archive. The archive is housed at Senate House, University of London.

Project Outputs

A major output of the AHRC-funded pilot scheme has been the now firmly established Festival in a Box outreach scheme, which as of 2017 continues to run on a sustainable basis as part of the Bloomsbury Festival’s year-round programme of community engagement.
